Bul

Someone figured out the Bul minigame from Nancy Drew: Secret of the Scarlet Hand and Nancy Drew: Curse of Blackmoor Manor! The clue was Sonny Joon's note, which says 1 and 3 have a frequency of 4.

Basically, when you do a roll in Bul, the game selects a randomly-determined number, from 1 to 16. The number you get determines how many spaces you move.

1 - move 1 space
2 - move 1 space
3 - move 1 space
4 - move 1 space
5 - move 2 spaces
6 - move 2 spaces
7 - move 2 spaces
8 - move 2 spaces
9 - move 2 spaces
10 - move 2 spaces
11 - move 3 spaces
12 - move 3 spaces
13 - move 3 spaces
14 - move 3 spaces
15 - move 4 spaces
16 - move 5 spaces

As you can see, 1 and 3 have a frequency of four. That is, "move 1 space" and "move 3 spaces" both show up four times on the chart. You have a 4 in 16 chance of getting either of them.

So if you're two squares away from an opponent, the odds of you landing on them are 6/16. The odds of you going past them are also 6/16. The odds of you and your opponent both getting a 1, resulting in your death, are 1/16. I guess that means if you're two squares away, you should definitely take a roll.

More on this tomorrow.
