Since our wedding was on the Fourth of July, we decided the recessional song at the wedding would be Battle Hymn of the Republic. Nobody knew the words, but EVERYONE knew the chorus!
We named all the tables after various Americans, like Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. We thought about picking Ronald Reagan, who's a favorite in California, but we decided against it. Sure enough, it turned out one of our guests is still very unhappy with Reagan's presidency, even though that was 30 years ago, and they should be over it by now.
We picked two fictional people, Carolyn Keene (author of the Nancy Drew series) and Captain James Kirk (the first captain in Star Trek). Captain Kirk is an American, but the actor who plays him is not.
Also, red white and blue was the default color scheme. That's why all the groomsmen had red ties and blue shirts. And they got cool little American flag pins for their lapels.
