Grease

I mentioned earlier that I don't like Grease, and I think I just figured out why.

It's the guy. Danny, or whatever his name is. He's the reason I don't like the movie.

In movies or books or whatever, I like to root for underdog, the guy or girl who's shy and nerdy. Basically, I enjoy characters who resemble me, and I love it when they succeed against all odds, because in a way, it gives me hope that I will succeed against all odds.

But Danny is more like the anti-me. He does and says things that I would never say or do. He has the perfect girlfriend, and he treats her horribly even though she's the best thing that ever happened to him. I can't stand guys like that. They're like kids in preschool who steal all the best toys and break them on purpose, just so no one else can play with them.

What about you readers, though? What kinds of characters do you root for? Do you prefer characters who resemble you, or do you prefer characters who are closer to "who I'd like to be" than "who I am"? Or do you prefer characters that don't resemble you, because opposites attract?

I don't like Grease (the stage version, never actually saw the movie), because it's basically set up as an anti-morality story.

I also don't like that they never closed the opening frame story.

I'm a bit mixed for the underdogs. Most I do root for, but some are just annoying and bother me because they just can't seem to do anything right, even though they could do somthing right if they wern't to busy complaining. Luckly, most arn't. I agree that I hate it when we're supposed to be rooting for someone who's abusive and rude. But, if they have a touching backstory and they don't make the character into a total jerk, then I like to root them on because they have a motive for their actions and it shows both a physical and mental struggle. On a side note, I haven't seen Grease, but I'm not sure if I'm going to go out of my way to see it. I would much rather see the Phantom of the Opera or the Music Man or even see Les Miserables again.

I love grease. My friend Katie did a broad way version of it (she's 12 or 13 years old)

I always root for the people who have to worst luck. Or in other words, the underdogs. Like in Total Drama, I always rooted for Cody and Noah because they always had the worst luck. Or, I always root for the person who gives others a hard time. The people who aren't exactly the antagonists, but they create some drama.

I didn't really like Grease either. It seems like the type of story that's about accepting people for who they are and not changing just to be liked, but at the end, the chick goes and degrades herself to be like all the other girls just so the guy will like her. -_-
I always feel sad when I watch Phantom of the Opera, since I end up feeling really bad for the phantom. Plus Raoul has ugly hair.

I prefer the cool-bad character that is supppeeer awesome and that even the good characters can't defeat them xD

I like characters who show some kind of development throughout the story, who grow stronger as people. I like Grease because both Danny and Sandy change throughout the plot. They both have to change in order to be together. But Marty is a whole different story (sigh))

I have a sort of love hate relationship with the movie as well. I also hate Danny's character because... well... perfect example: at the end of the movie, all he does to try and change for her is put on a sweater. She takes up smoking, perms her perfect hair to look semi-trashy and squeezes herself into the tiniest pants I've ever seen.

I usually root for someone who is similar to me as well. I like the shy, nerdy or awkward people because they're usually sweet and funny in a dorky way, which I appreciate.

Never seen Grease, but here's my thoughts on protagonists:

I don't have a "preference" for the different types of main characters--in fact, if I have one preference, it would be that the main character wouldn't easily fit into a type. Rather, they would have personality contradictions, just like real people. I guess I'll root for any character with virtue, who sticks with his principles even when it's inconvenient.

The movie version of Grease is awful, the stage version is hilarious. It has a lot of bad behavior, but it's also about friendship. It's actually pretty accurate when it comes to teenage behavior. As for underdogs, I'm tired of them. There's no surprise. about halfway through the movie, you know that he or she is going to win, which means there's no surprise. I like movies that are haven't been made a million times before.

Also, you've mentioned that you really like high school musical, which is almost exactly the same as Grease.

I don't like it either. No values, no learning, sexist and stereotypical characters all dressed up as glamorous exciting and normal and marketed at young people. Euch! I am astounded that parents let such young kids watch it. Just 'cos there's music doesn't make it right.

I like characters who try. Try to do the right thing, try to be themselves, try to learn. They don't have to be like me, or unlike me they don't even have to be good, just have some humanity. Examples of characters I root for - Carlito in Carlito's Way, Frannie in Strictly Ballroom, Eileen Wuornos in Monster, Quoyle in Shipping News, Sonny in Dog Day Afternoon, Marge in Fargo, Muriel in Muriel's Wedding, Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption, Harold & Maude, Starling in Silence of the Lambs, Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, Charlie & Rose in The African Queen.

I don't like Grease at all, for the reason you don't. I hate how Sandy was such a sweetie and then she turns into trash and suddenly we're supposed to be happy. Haven't they ever heard that you shouldn't change for the somebody else? Sigh. Oh well.

I agree with you Arglefumph, I never got into this movie no matter how many times my sister made me watch it. And I also kind of agree with the underdog statement, although I like characters that are less like me and more like how I wish I were.

I have no idea why... but I always root for the villain(s)of the movie or book. Either that or the mysterious character, cuz most stories has a mysterious character, right?
